Why it happens
These drugs share no relevant pharmacology with psilocin. Psilocin is cleared mainly by glucuronidation and conversion to 4-HIAA, with MAO-A, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 implicated in laboratory work. None of the listed drugs appears on the FDA's list of strong or moderate CYP2D6 or CYP3A inhibitors, and in one study CYP2D6 genotype did not affect psilocin blood levels.
What is known
Absence of a mechanism and absence of a signal. This entry exists so people can stop worrying about their statin and pay attention to the entries that matter.
- 2017
- Psilocybin is dephosphorylated to psilocin, and psilocin-O-glucuronide is the main urinary metabolite. Dinis-Oliveira, Drug Metabolism Reviews 2017
- 2024
- In vitro, recombinant CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 metabolised nearly 100% and 40% of psilocin respectively, and MAO-A produced minimal 4-HIAA; in the human population studied, CYP2D6 genotype did not influence psilocin plasma concentrations. Thomann et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology 2024
- 2026
- FDA's example lists of strong and moderate CYP2D6 and CYP3A inhibitors do not include ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin, atorvastatin, metformin, omeprazole, levothyroxine, cetirizine, loratadine or salbutamol (omeprazole is listed only as a weak CYP2C19 inhibitor). Safety guidance
- These medicines are not a concern with mushrooms; keep taking them as prescribed.
- Psychiatric drugs, MAOIs and some strong enzyme inhibitors are the ones to check on this site.
- If your medicine is not listed anywhere, it has probably not been studied rather than being proven safe.
- A pharmacist can check a specific medicine for you.
When to seek help
Seek medical help for anything unexpected such as chest pain, fainting, a severe allergic reaction or breathing difficulty, whatever its cause. Emergency red flags.
Common questions
Can I take ibuprofen or paracetamol for a headache after mushrooms?
Yes, there is no known interaction.
Does the contraceptive pill interact with psilocybin?
No interaction is known, and contraceptive hormones are not on the FDA's strong or moderate inhibitor lists for the enzymes involved.
What about medicines not listed here?
Not being listed means not studied, not proven safe. Check the specific entries on this site or ask a pharmacist.
