Are magic mushrooms legal in Nepal?
UnclearIt is unclear. The position in Nepal is contested, partly exempted or unevenly enforced; treat it as prohibited until you have read the primary source.
Nepal's Narcotic Drugs (Control) Act names cannabis, opium and coca but not psilocybin. It also covers any psychotropic substance the government specifies in the Nepal Gazette, and it has not been confirmed whether psilocybin has been notified. Treat the position as unclear and assume prohibition until you have checked the Gazette.

What is and is not allowed
- Possession
- Psilocybin is not named in the Act itself, but the definition of narcotic drug covers any psychotropic substance the government specifies by Nepal Gazette notification, and no such notification was checked.
- Penalties
- If psilocybin is a notified substance, the Act's prohibited acts would cover purchasing, storing, possessing and consuming it. Addiction to a notified substance carries up to 2 months' imprisonment and a fine up to NPR 2,000, or both. Penalties for other prohibited acts vary by substance and quantity and were not checked for psilocybin.
