Collected once near Tampa in 1977 and effectively never found in the wild again. Every specimen in circulation descends from that single collection. It is grown almost entirely for its sclerotia, the hard underground masses sold legally as truffles in the Netherlands.

Figures here are for the SCLEROTIA, which is what people actually take. Fresh truffles are about 70% water, so a 15 g fresh portion is roughly 4.5 g dry, the source of most dosing confusion around truffles.

Identification
Easiest way to tell: Underground sclerotia rather than a mushroom. There is no realistic field-identification scenario for this species.
- Sclerotium
- Irregular hard off-white to brownish underground masses, 1–3 cm, forming below the substrate surface. This is the part that is used.
- Cap
- 1–2.5 cm when it fruits at all, ochre to yellow-brown, conical with an umbo.

Functionally a cultivated-only organism. Do not expect to find it.
Cultivation
Sclerotia form in a dark colonised substrate over two to three months with no fruiting chamber, no humidity control and no light. It is the least equipment-dependent way to produce psilocybin material.
